Every year, the Office of Career Services (“OCS”) works closely with our students to obtain internships and externships in New York City, where there are a plethora of job opportunities. Specifically, Seton Hall Law students have worked with Federal or State judges, government and non-profit organizations, law firms, and in-house counsel or compliance positions.

Students interested in working in New York City can, and should, start as early as the summer after their 1L year. Judges, both Federal and State usually hire at least one intern for the summer. Judicial internships are a great way for first-year students to get a sense of the litigation system, understand how a case progresses, and learn how judges make their decisions. Some students choose to work for a government organization or non-profit. There are so many government organizations in New York City, at the State, City, and Borough level for students to become involved with. There are also a lot of non-profit organizations that exist to serve underrepresented individuals in the City who need help, and students can get great experience with these organizations as well.

Students who are interested in working for law firms and corporations also have a variety of choices. Most of the big law firms on the Vault 100 or AmLaw 200 list have offices in New York City. Several large law firms in New York employ Seton Hall Law Alumni. At these larger firms, the majority of the attorneys generally practice corporate law. There are also smaller, more specialized practice area firms in the City, known as boutique law firms. If you know the area in which you would like to practice, we can narrow down your search of law firms in New York City to smaller boutique firms. Midsized or larger firms will likely have teams dedicated to particular practice areas as well. There are also several in-house counsel or compliance roles at large companies in New York City where Seton Hall Law students obtain internships and work later in their careers.

In OCS, we also work closely with our students to develop networking skills and strategies. Networking is a big part of being an attorney. Later in your career, firms will expect that you can bring business to the firm, which requires the ability to network. At Seton Hall Law School, OCS works with all our students on an individual basis to obtain the tools and strategies to help start their career in New York City, or in any other place they may want to practice.

New York City has endless opportunities for young lawyers and Seton Hall Law School can help you get there!
